Nostalgic, Kinda Creepy Mickey Mouse Toy
May 7, 2008
I don’t know quite what it is about this ad, but I’ve been looking at it every day on BoingBoing in my blogreader, trying to figure out what to say about it.
I’m just not sure what it is exactly that creeps me out, and draws me in at the same time. Is it the fact that Mickey’s head is completely disconnected from his body? Does the wonderfully fey tilt of his hips remind me of the drag queens who took me under their collective wings in my early twenties? Am I having a nostalgic moment, remembering the horror comic books of my childhood and their ads for impossible toys, toys that I always felt nobody ever really ordered, but knew somebody must or the ads would disappear?
Or, perhaps most likely, is it my inherent, inborn fear of “2-foot jolly MONKEY DOODLE”?
