Kinda Hot Mom Offers Disneyland Tips

30 May

No, I am not the kinda hot mom in question . . . Kinda Hot Mom blogger Karina Bland offers some tips today for taking the kids to Disneyland. My favorite?

You can’t hurry bravery. Note to parents: If you force crying children onto rides, shaking with fear, they will not have some sort of epiphany mid-way through the loop on the California Screamin’ roller coaster or in the dark graveyard in the Haunted Mansion that they suddenly like scary rides. They will only think you are mean for making them go, and they are right.

For every kid who decides that roller coasters are fun, I’ve heard stories of three kids who didn’t. I still remember a couple of crying children last October whose parent wouldn’t let them skip Tower of Terror, despite their constant protests.

And on a happier note, I also remember a family who decided at the last minute not to force their four-year-old to ride Dinosaur, after hearing from another Guest that it is indeed dark and scary, and things do in fact jump out at you. The mom looked awfully frustrated after all that time in line to have to turn back, and I hope she felt good about doing right by her kid. Sooner or later that four-year-old boy will be old enough to enjoy Dinosaur, or to hang out on his own, cruising other teens while mom and dad hit all the thrill rides.

I’m always amazed by how many parents I see trying to force their kids on rides. I’ve never forced my 4-year-old onto a ride. I’ve tried to coax him into thinking it might be fun 😉 but that’s about all.

He’s been tall enough to go on Dinosaur for about a year, but he just went on it for the first time two weeks ago. He was covering his eyes in the photo at the end, it was so cute! But he wasn’t traumatized or anything – he wanted to go again last week, and this time he didn’t cover his eyes. 🙂

Hey, Kitty-Chan. Thanks so much for backing me up on why parents shouldn’t force their kids onto too-scary rides. They’ll decide when they’re ready. I’m enjoying your blog.
