Chickens going on strike! An oversized mouse laying an egg! Check out Alice’s Egg Plant, one of the Alice comedies made by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in the 1920s. (Might want to watch it with the sound off . . . the soundtrack was dubbed in later, and is somewhat distracting. Thanks Crayshen for posting it to YouTube!)
You might notice one of the main characters strongly resembles Felix the Cat . . . this is not an accident. From Wikipedia:
Julius the Cat, later renamed Mike to match the name of Ike the Mouse which he often appeared with, bears a striking resemblance to Felix the Cat. This wasn’t accidental: Charles Mintz, who distributed both the Felix series for Pat Sullivan and the Alice series for Walt Disney, had insisted on this in an attempt to emulate Felix’s success. Ike the Mouse on the other hand, bears a striking resemblance to a nude Mickey Mouse. This couple was one of the earlier attempts to create a cat and mouse pair in the animation business.
Ah, the earliest forerunners of Itchy and Scratchy . . . it warms my heart.
Thanks for the link Kitty-Chan!
I have never seen an Alice comedy before! One more thing scratched off of my to-do list before I die!
Thanks for stopping by George!
I hadn’t seen any of the Alice comedies before either, and was really pleased to come across this on YouTube. Thank goodness for the interweb.
You’re quite welcome, although I’m still quite confuzzled by the weirdo soundtrack and random editing that was done on this. Ah well…there IS more on the way you know….(Random plug!)
This is obviously a well-worn 16mm reduction print of the sound re-issues of the early 1930s. All of these versions I have seen have had the references to LITTLE RED HENSKY and the implication of the Hen Strike being “Communist insired” removed.
It remains in the Disney archive print as released in the DISNEY RAREITIES two years ago, and also in our version, which came from a near pristine 35mm source that is superior to all other versions including Disney’s.
While the 35mm source was a Raytone re-issue, the soundtrack was absent. I created my own soundtrack, which I would hope is more entertaining and comedic. Our version of ALICE’S EGG PLANT can be seen on our release, ALICE IN CARTOONLAND: THE ORIGINAL ALICE COMEDIES by Walt Disney.
I’m looking for the cartoon character for Bobby Day’s Rockin Robin
along with the music can you help?
