There are days when I am cranky and jaded, and sad that my lifetime will be too short to see the social change I crave so badly.
And then there are days like today, when I received a lovely email from Rob, letting me know that on August 2, she and her lovely bride Sarah became the first same-sex couple to become legally wed at Disneyland. Their photographer, Chenin Boutwell, has captured the occasion with a series of stunning, tear-jerker photos viewable on her blog.
When I was an 18-year-old queer kid, roaming the halls of the Massachusetts State House in 1985 lobbying for the Gay Rights Bill, and watching it fail, I wouldn’t have imagined that it would pass four years later…or that same-sex marriage would be recognized in my state in another twelve years…or that California would follow us soon after. And when I reflect on this, this jaded cranky girl just melts like a Mickey bar in August.
My very best wishes to Rob and Sarah for a long, happy life together! And who knows what other dreams may come true for us all?
This news does my heart no small amount of good.
What a beautiful wedding! It’s great to see how much things have changed in just a few years.
That’s really beautiful. And her dad, he looks so happy. I can’t imagine why anyone would object to that.
